Exploring the professional and personal faces of leadership
Welcome back to another instalment of our blog series ‘Leadership Stories’, where we explore the professional and personal faces of leadership and embrace the inspirational power of storytelling.
In this episode, Zoe Harries, Chief Partnerships & Sales Officer at a Saudi Public Investment Fund project shares her insights with us on leadership in the Middle East.
Professional
What are the greatest challenges as a leader for you?
As a leader, understanding the cultural expectations has been the greatest challenge for me. In the UAE, the international community provides a different dynamic compared to Saudi, where 70% of our company comprises of nationals. This has required me to immerse myself more in the local way of life and understand the nuances of the culture. The language barrier, especially not being fluent in Arabic, adds another layer of complexity to communications.
One unique aspect of my leadership role is being the only woman in the C-suite. While it has been a fascinating experience, I am constantly navigating how to interpret certain situations accurately. As a non-native Arabic speaker, I often find myself evaluating the right time to speak.
I believe that embracing these challenges has provided me with valuable insights and growth opportunities as a leader. I am continuously learning and adapting to effectively lead in a diverse and dynamic environment.
I believe that by working together as a team and embracing our differences, we can create a more inclusive and understanding environment for everyone. I am committed to learning and growing in this role, and I appreciate my team's support and understanding as I navigate these challenges.
What do you believe will be the most effective leadership style in coming years?
As we look ahead to the future, one word comes to mind: agility.
In the evolving landscape of leadership, agility has emerged as the most effective style for the coming years. It is crucial to be ready for the unexpected and to navigate through unprecedented times with resilience. Taking a holistic approach in all aspects of leadership enables better adaptability and ensures success in the face of challenges.
What is the key to encouraging diversity of thought when building teams?
It’s important to bring different perspectives and insights, as well as various technical skills and knowledge, to an environment where people can challenge and learn from each other. I believe that the sum is greater than its parts, but this is only true when there is diversity. When diversity of thought is well orchestrated synergies and innovation are promoted.
Personal
Is there a moment that you feel changed the course of your career?
For me, there have been two significant instances, spaced a few years apart, that have truly defined my professional journey.
A decade ago, I found myself at a crossroads where I contemplated leaving the corporate world behind to embark on a fulfilling path as a yoga instructor. Yoga has always served as a powerful tool for personal growth and navigating high-pressure environments. To my surprise, delving deeper into yoga not only enriched my soul but also propelled my career to new heights. Fast forward three years, I took the leap to establish my own company, marking another crucial turning point in my professional trajectory. These moments of transformation have shaped the person I am today and the success I have achieved professionally.
Can you tell us about something that happened at work that made you feel included or excluded?
Personally, I've noticed a significant difference in how included I feel working in emerging markets compared to Europe. In emerging markets, there seems to be more room for growth and opportunity, which has allowed me to thrive in ways I never thought possible. On the contrary, Europe has felt more rigid and exclusive, making it challenging for someone like me who doesn't necessarily fit the typical corporate mould or follow a traditional career path. One aspect that has truly stood out to me is the presence of strong and inspiring women in leadership roles in regions like the Middle East, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa. It's been eye-opening to see the high level of inclusivity and support for women in these areas, defying the stereotypes one might expect.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Be selective about who you take advice from because it might limit you. People who care about you tend to tell you to stay within your comfort zone.
